Newtown Parks and Recreation campers in Coding In Minecraft spent time between July 31 to August 3 learning about creating modifications and items in the computer game, Minecraft.minecraft.net.

Instructor Doris Brovarski with Computer Explorers said the students were spending the third day of the camp, on August 2, creating new items that they would be able to transfer and use on their own versions of the computer game at home. Students were creating virtual items like swords, pick axes, and food.

Minecraft is a computer game that has players build items by exploring and gathering provisions, according to its website,

"It's fun. It's interesting to see the ideas the kids come up with, and they have fun doing it," said Ms Brovarski as students worked at computers in Hawley Elementary School's library.

Ms Brovarksi said the week-long camp was an educational program that teaches team building and more. The students worked together to create their Minecraft designs.

Campers Finn Roche, 8, and Patty Parker, 7, said they had worked together to make a number of different items so far on August 2. Campers Carl Badinelli, 8, and Abigail Friedman, 8, were making a type of virtual food to use in the game.

"We're working on making a donut pizza," said Carl.

Nearby Matthew Cherepinsky, 9, and Dale Headford, 8, were making "diamond bread," and Lauren Murphy,10, and Alyssa Friedman, 11, were making a "color carrot."
