Boys' Basketball Team Beats Weston, Falls To Brookfield

Newtown High School's boys' basketball team defeated host Weston 60-55 on February 19, and fell 53-52 at Brookfield in the season finale, on February 24.

Against Weston, Nevin Zink led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds. Mason Melillo had nine points - on a trio of 3-pointers - and blocked three shots. Joe Duero, who sank a couple of shots from downtown, scored eight. Nick Weiland and Dillon Palumbo each dropped in seven and had five assists, and Palumbo also came away with three steals. Sam Grossano added five points.

Palumbo was Newtown's top scorer in the loss to Brookfield, dropping in 22 points, four of which came on 3-pointers. Weiland scored ten, Melillo again scored nine, all on 3-pointers, Duero had six, Sam Duffy scored four, and Zink added one.

Melillo and Duffy pulled down nine and eight rebounds, respectively, and Weiland and Melillo each had three of the team's 12 steals. Weiland added six assists.

Newtown came back from an 18-11 deficit after one quarter of play, and led 25-24 at halftime and 39-36 after three quarters of play before Brookfield fought back.

The Nighthawks suffered a pair of overtime defeats and four losses in games decided by four points or less, and ended the campaign with an overall record of 5-15.
