Both of Newtown High School's soccer teams shut out Stratford 6-0 on October 18 - the boys at Blue & Gold Stadium on Senior Night, and the girls in a road contest at Penders Field.

Coming off a week between games, the boys were clearly ready to get back into competition mode. The Nighthawks erupted for a season-high goal-scoring performance.

Elliott Bennett, who had waited even longer to play in a game, returning to action after sitting out a couple of weeks nursing a foot injury, fittingly got the scoring barrage started. Jack Oltran followed up an effort by Tom Shkreli to make it 2-0 at the half, and the Nighthawks poured it on from there.

In the second half, the Nighthawks repeatedly used their speed to get behind Stratford's defenders. Brendan O'Hara had a long run with the ball in which he darted to the right side of field before cutting back to his left and getting the ball into the 18-yard box where Shane Gattey finished for a 3-0 cushion. O'Hara later got deep again but had his shot deflect off the goalkeeper and goal post.

Shkreli raced down the right side line and put home a shot on the near side to make it 4-0. A strong effort and dribble by Jack Vaughan led to Aidan Ford's net-finder for a 5-0 lead, and James Barden capped the scoring.

Newtown improved to 5-3-4 heading into Wednesday's visit to Immaculate of Danbury, beginning at 6 pm. The Hawks, after visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Thursday, will host Bethel in the regular-season finale on Tuesday, October 25, when the Wildcats visit Blue & Gold Stadium for a 7 pm contest.

The girls equaled their highest-scoring performance of the campaign (they also netted six in win over Holy Cross) to improve to 10-2-3.

Sarah Houle and Sydney Howard both scored twice, and Katie Sailer and Hannah Daly added goals. Makenna Cerney, Julia Sughrue, Emma Curtis, and Brianna Capozziello all had assists. Goalkeepers Meghan Doyle and Haley Taylor combined for the team's seventh shutout of the fall.

Newtown will host Kolbe Cathedral at Treadwell Park in the season finale on Thursday, October 20, beginning at 3:45 pm.
