Newtown High School's softball team extended its winning streak this week, beginning with a pair of double-digit efforts. The Nighthawks toppled visiting Immaculate of Danbury 13-1 in a run-rule, five-inning game on April 20, then put together a 14-3 triumph at Joel Barlow of Redding two days later, before defeating visiting Brookfield 4-1 on April 25 for their fourth victory in succession.

Newtown did all of its damage in one inning of the Immaculate game, cooking up a baker's dozen worth of runs in the fourth. The Nighthawks had one productive inning against Brookfield, plating all four runs in the second frame of that matchup.

Against Immaculate, leadoff hitter Haley Ryan had a hit and scored twice in the 13-run frame. Sara Kennedy produced a single, double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Kate Laaksonen walked, reached base twice, scored a run, and had an RBI. Mali Klorczyk contributed a single, two runs scored, and an RBI. Kamdyn Moroney had a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Mackenzie Macchiarulo scored a run and had an RBI. Jill Lasorsa had an RBI single, walk, and a run scored. Tess Mubarek had a single, an RBI, and one run scored. Shannon Cheh delivered two singles and two runs batted in. Cheh also had a double in the game.

In the Barlow game, Newtown jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. The Nighthawks scored three more in each the fourth and fifth innings and pulled away. The leadoff spot gave the team a spark as the Hawks reached base and scored four times from that part of the lineup; Ryan had three singles and three runs scored, and Lauren Wilcox entered the game and had a hit and a run scored. Kennedy had a homer, two doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored. Laaksonen had five hits, including a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. Moroney had two singles, two RBI, and a run scored. Macchiarulo had two singles and two runs scored. Cheh had a pair of RBI singles. Emily Bell had a single and two runs scored.

"They smacked the ball all over the place," Newtown Coach Bob Guererra said. "It was crisp. We hit the ball really well today. Everybody contributed."

Newtown fell behind 1-0 to Brookfield in the opening inning, but came back with that four-spot in the second. Newtown did its damage with clutch two-put hitting. Ryan delivered a two-out bases-loaded single to score a run, and Kennedy drove in three with a double. Moroney had a double and scored in the inning. Wilcox struck out seven batters in the triumph.

Newtown, heading into Wednesday's scheduled visit to Bunnell of Stratford on Wednesday, April 27, beginning at 4:15 pm, is led by Laaksonen with a .515 batting average, Kennedy and Laaksonen have 15 and 13 RBI, respectively. Ryan led the team with 13 runs scored, and Kennedy and Laaksonen have both crossed home plate a dozen times. Wilcox and Kennedy both have 4-1 records as Newtown stands at 8-2 overall and 3-0 in South-West Conference play.
