Al Francis Sampley, 92, of Newtown died August 27. He was born February 6, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Marjorie (Partridge) and Harry G. Sampley.

A decorated war hero and well-respected antiques dealer for more than 50 years, Mr Sampley co-owned Almar Antiques of Wells, Maine, with his devoted wife, Mary Anne.

He was an aviator, serving in the US Army during World War II, and as the captain of the Civil Air Patrol based in Monroe. Mr Sampley was a member of VFW Post 308 in Newtown.

An avid sportsman, he had a penchant for breaking records — he competed in midget car racing, and bowled a perfect game. He loved golf, fishing, hunting, boating, and skiing. He was an extraordinary photographer and artist, and his dry humor was remarkable.

He will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.

His loving wife, Mary Ann (Killian) Sampley; and his dear friends, the Albanese family survive Mr Sampley.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday, September 2, at 11 am, in Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street, Newtown. Interment with military honors will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery. Friends may call at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Tuesday, September 1, from 5 to 7 pm.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to Disabled American Veterans at www.DAV.org, or to the Newtown Animal Center at www.theanimalcenter.org.
