A Modest Proposal For The Flagpole Intersection

To the Editor:

Nothing says “Newtown” more than the flagpole at Main Street and Church Hill Road.

Rather than opt for a nondescript juncture at the center of town, I offer a modest proposal: 1) Install traffic signals on the right side of the road at each of the four corners entering the intersection; and 2) Have a timed green light for each of them individually (i.e. one at a time), to avoid any oncoming traffic.

Traffic signals on the right side of the road, rather than hanging from a center wire, are common in many US towns and cities – Washington DC comes to mind. And if traffic from just one of the four entrances to the intersection moves at once, the accident problem should be greatly reduced.

No alteration to the structure that defines our town. No road widening. No raised center median. Traffic safety improved.

That will be $17,900.
