A Flawed System
A Flawed System
To the Editor:
The system by which this town proposes, amends, and subsequently votes on its budget is terribly flawed. It does not allow the voice of a significant portion of the population to be heard. Those, like myself, who disapprove of this budget based on the significant cuts to the education side cannot vote No. I have no interest in condoning a flawed process by voting Yes to this budget, but I have no choice.
Being the 21st Century, it should be so simple; it confounds me that the leaders of this town â including the Legislative Council and the Boards of Finance, Selectmen, and Education â cannot (or will not) formulate a process that will adequately assess the desire and needs of all Newtownâs citizens.
