Improper Turn

A 2019 Chevrolet Spark LS being operated by Michael L. Schaker, 34, of Bethel, was leaving the parking lot of 79 South Main Street/Ricky’s Shopping Plaza and had just entered the northbound traffic lane of South Main Street around 7:05 am, Tuesday, May 4.

A 2015 Ford Explorer XLT being operated by Elizabeth Paynter, 55, of Newtown, was traveling southbound on South Main Street and made a sharp left turn into the plaza. The front driver’s side of the Explorer struck the rear driver’s side of the Spark in the process.

No injuries were reported on scene.

Paynter was issued a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Audi vs Mailboxes

Newtown police report that mailboxes from 38 and 40 Marlin Road were struck down by a vehicle around 11:30 pm, Sunday, May 23.

The lower bumper fog light grille of an Audi A4 was left at the scene.

Harley-Davidson vs Mack Truck

According to Connecticut State Police, a 2013 Mack Truck 999 traveling on I-84 East was stopped for traffic in the high speed lane near the Exit 9 ramps around 8:09 pm, Thursday, May 27.

A 2004 Harley-Davidson FXDLI being operated by Jose R. Martinez, 26, of Waterbury, was traveling behind the truck at a high rate of speed.

Martinez lost control of the motorcycle, fell off it, and struck the road surface of the left and center lanes. The Harley-Davidson then skidded on the road surface unoccupied before striking the rear of the Mack and becoming lodged in the undercarriage of the truck.

Eric N. Martey, 44, of Bronx, N.Y., the driver of the Mack truck, was not injured.

Martinez was transported to the hospital with suspected serious injuries. The motorcycle was towed from the scene.

Arrested At Fairfield Hills

Newtown police located a suspicious vehicle on the Fairfield Hills campus around 1:32 am, Friday, May 28, after which three individuals were discovered inside one of the buildings on campus.

A check of the group showed that Henry Earl Fiendel, 19, of Torrington, had two active warrants in Torrington.

Fiendel was arrested and charged with two counts of failure to appear-second degree. He was held on a $1,000 bond and given a court appearance of June 15 at Danbury Superior Court.

Crash Under Investigation

Newtown police responded to a one-car motor vehicle accident near 27 Taunton Lane around 3:39 am, Saturday, May 29.

Following an investigation, it was determined that a 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition sedan being operated by Brendan Morrissey, 18, of Newtown, had been traveling southbound on Taunton Lane. The vehicle went off the roadway, striking a roadside mailbox and rock wall.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Morrissey to the hospital for suspected serious injuries.

The Jetta sustained disabling damage and was towed from the scene.

The accident is under investigation, according to the police report.

Failure To Yield

A Mercedes-Benz C 280 sedan being operated by Arthur Walker, 54, of Hamden, was traveling northbound on Hattertown Road, at the stop sign at the intersection of Dodgingtown Road/Route 302, around 10:35 am, Saturday, May 29.

A second vehicle (no details given) being operated by Daisy Gesualdi, 22, of Bethel, was traveling southbound on Dodgingtown Road/Route 302, north of the intersection at Hattertown Road.

The Mercedes entered into the southbound travel lane in a failed attempt to merge into the northbound travel lane. The front end of Walker’s vehicle struck the front end of Gesualdi’s vehicle.

Dodgingtown Fire also responded to the scene.

Walker was issued an infraction ticket for failure to yield to a vehicle that is not obliged to do so.

Too Fast For Conditions

A 2005 Toyota Camry LE/XLE/SE being operated by Lilli I. Rohde, 22, of Sandy Hook, was traveling southbound on Taunton Lake Road near that road’s intersection with Irvin Lane around 11:34 am, Saturday, May 29.

While negotiating a left-hand curve in the road, the sedan left the southbound lane and went onto the southbound shoulder. The car struck the curbing and a stone wall in front of 24 Taunton Lake Road before reentering the southbound lane, where it came to rest.

Rohde was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

She was issued a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

I-84 Early Morning Crash

Connecticut State Police report that Tariq R. Arthurs, 20, of Torrington, lost control of the 2004 Honda Accord LX he was operating on I-84 East near the Rochambeau Bridge around 3:55 am, Sunday, May 30.

The vehicle struck a rock face in the embankment off the shoulder, causing the vehicle to partially roll over.

Arthurs had a suspected minor injury, according to the accident report, and was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the hospital.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company and a paramedic also responded to the scene.

Arthurs was issued an infraction for failure to maintain the proper travel lane.

Collision Within Fairfield Hills

Newtown police report that a 2015 Mazda Miata 3T operated by Juliette Cryder (no age or town given) was traveling northbound on D.G. Beers Boulevard near First Street, around 2:03 pm, Monday, May 31.

A 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan operated by Ella I. Tretow, 17, of Westport, was in a parking lot located on D.G. Beers Boulevard in the same area.

The Tiguan entered into the northbound travel lane of D.G. Beers Boulevard when it was unsafe to do so, and the front end of the Miata struck the left rear corner of the Tiguan.

There were no reported injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to damages.

Tretow was issued an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way at a private driveway and three counts of passenger restrictions.
