Newtown Cultural Arts Commission ‘Virtual Art For 2020’
Saying “The virus won’t define us,” Newtown Cultural Arts Commission member Tracy Van Buskirk described how the Commission will be sharing the arts on the Commission’s Facebook page, according to information received from Commission Chair Laura Lerman.
“We’ll be sharing a different art each day of the week,” Van Buskirk said. “Monday is Poetry (April is National Poetry Month!), Tuesday is Theater, Wednesday is Arts and Crafts for all ages, Thursday is Music and Song, and Friday is Fine Arts.” Some postings will be interactive, some will be just for the pleasure of seeing and enjoying the art and some will be informative. Some will be from the Newtown area and some will be from further away.
Each example of each art will be contributed by a different member of the Commission. Monday, Poetry, will be headed by Van Burkirk and Lisa Schwartz, the Newtown Poet Laureate. Schwartz and Van Buskirk produced “Risk A Verse” for three years, in which community members from all walks of life publicly shared a favorite poem. Tuesday will be produced by Terry Sagedy, a well known director at local playhouses. Wednesday, Arts and Crafts for All Ages, will be lead by Jennifer Cebry, the program director of The Newtown Community Center. Grant Ossendryver, the director of The Inspiring School of Music and Laura Lerman, president of the Newtown Choral Society, will bring music on Thursdays. Finally, Sue Kassirer, a board member of SCAN (Society of Creative Arts of Newtown), will be heading up Fine Art on Fridays.
The virtual arts programs began on Monday, April 13, with an invitation for sharing a haiku poem. On Tuesday, April 14, the Commission’s Facebook page featured a “Broadway song with a twist,” — “Maskmaker, Maskmaker,” a play on The Fiddle on the Roof classic song, “Matchmaker, Matchmaker.”
