Members of The Garden Club of Newtown returned home following the Connecticut Flower & Garden Show last month with another collection of honors and awards. The club has done very well in recent years at the annual event in Hartford.

Presented at Connecticut Convention Center February 21-24, the annual show featured more than 300 vendor booths offering everything from fresh flowers, plants, herbs, bulbs, and seeds to gardening books, garden equipment, landscaping ideas and tools, and much more.

The show also hosted 80 hours of seminars and demonstrations and the 38th annual Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut Design & Horticulture Competition. The theme of the 2019 Standard Flower Show was “April in Paris.”

Covering more than 12,000 square feet within the convention center, the show hosted more than 250 judged entries within design, horticulture, and photography divisions.

According to Garden Club of Newtown President Peg Townsend, club member Marilynn Klepfer was among this year’s winners following the Standard Flower Show.

Ms Klepfer won a blue ribbon and the Education Award of Excellence for the highest scoring educational exhibit. Ms Klepfer’s display was called “Vermicomposting: Make Compost 365 Days A Year!”

Ms Townsend also won a few honors this year, including a blue ribbon for “The Ocean’s Song,” an underwater design; another blue ribbon and Grower’s Choice Award for her dish garden; and an honorable mention for “The Paris Skyline,” a construction design.

Former club president and longtime club member Deb Osborne won a yellow ribbon for her Grouped Mass Design honoring Georges Seurat’s painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grand Jatte.”

Peggy Jepsen received honorable mention for “The Night They Invented Champagne,” a semi-formal functional table design.

In addition, a group effort in the Club Competition division, “Kitchen Confidential: Vignette of a Chef’s Kitchen,” created by Joyce DeWolfe, Alma Kearns, Deb Osborne, Vicky Taloni, Mary Thomas, Peg Townsend, and Louise Zierzow, also received honorable mention.
