Todd Sylvester claimed the 1986 Mr Newtown title at the annual pageant held at the High School recently. Sean Cassidy and Dan Cox were runners-up. About 200 people attended the Class of ’87-sponosred event which traditionally is a spoof of the Miss Newtown Pageant.

Raymond L. Hall, Past High Priest, of Hiram Chapter 1, Royal Arch Masons, was honored at a public meeting at the Lodge in Sandy Hook, April 23, in recognition of his 65th year as a Royal Arch Mason. In the 195-year history of the chapter, Companion Hall is the only member who has attained this plateau.

The Newtown Ambulance Association’s 10-year-old Cadillac ambulance is on its way to Nigeria. The ambulance has not been used in Newtown since last summer, because it did not meet the state’s revised cabin size standards for ambulances. When the ambulance association learned an ambulance was needed for a medical clinic in Aba, Nigeria, it offered the vehicle. The ambulance association provided a spare tire, and even threw in a stretcher.

In continuing its program for the beautification of Newtown, the civic committee for the Garden Club of Newtown is pleased to announce that it has undertaken the project of clearing the river banks of the Pohtatuck River on either side of the bridge in Sandy Hook at the foot of Church Hill Road, and constructing a small wildlife sanctuary.

Miss Jayne Meadows, television personality and national co-chairman of the Mental Health Drive, was greeted by Gordon D. Holmes, director of the [Fairfield Hills] hospital’s rehabilitation department, as she arrived last Saturday afternoon to tour the hospital and view the annual patients’ arts and crafts exhibit in Plymouth Hall. In observance of National Mental Health Week, the public has been invited to visit the hospital this week.

Robert L. deVeer of Main Street was reelected for a two-year term as warden of the Borough of Newtown at the annual borough election held on Tuesday, May 2. This year only 36 people exercised their privileges to cast a ballot. There was a discussion of zoning and planning, the water situation, traffic problems, and advisability of additional fire hydrants. Mr deVeer presided.

Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook, is the scene of a few changes these days, with the preparation of approaches to the bridge over Route 84. The hill is being reduced in grade and extended to the bridge.

 

May 1, 1936

The Sandy Hook Package Store opens next Monday under the management of Harold Bassett of Sandy Hook. This new store will carry a complete stock of choice liquors and wines. One of the features of the place will be its delivery service from the store direct to the customer.

The committee on publicity and advertising has just received one thousand tickets to be sold at 25 cents each (10 cents to children 12 or under), for the gigantic Mardi Gras of the Newtown Young People’s Club to be held at the Edmond gym on May 15 and 16. Barely has the excitement run so high about any affair in recent years. Just about everybody will be there and each of the fifty novel features of amusement will attract people of all ages.

This Friday, May 1st, the Mitchell Dairy Co. of Bridgeport will take over the milk route of James Andresen of maple Tree Farm, Mt Pleasant, and in the future will deliver milk to Mr Andersen’s customers. In the future, customers may have all grades of popular pasteurized milk, Grade A and Vitamin D and certified milk from the Judd’s Farm Dairy. They will also have cottage cheese, buttermilk, ice cream, eggs, and dairy products.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of a thoroughbred Irish Terrier, red brown in color and with a green strap and leash, will gladden the heart of Miss Frances Deitsch, if they will kindly notify The Bee office, or her father, telephone Newtown 184. It suddenly disappeared from the home in Gray’s Plain last Friday night, and Miss Frances, eight years old, is heartbroken.

May 5, 1911

The High School second team and the Boy Scouts crossed bats at the opening game of the local baseball season at the Fair Grounds, Saturday, and the High School trimmed the Scouts to the tune of 4 and 2. It was exciting, intensely exciting, up to the sixth inning, neither side having scored.

Land’s End Cemetery: Have you relatives or friends buried in Land’s End cemetery? During the past year the officers of the Cemetery Association have taken it upon themselves to improve the much neglected grounds. Stone posts and iron gates at the entrance have been erected; 20 or more large trees have been removed; fallen and broken headstones have been repaired and reset for those who financially are unable to care for them. It is our desire to create a fund of $5,000, the interest of which will insure perpetual care of the grounds. A prompt and liberal donation is urged by the officers and members of this association.

The annual business meeting of the Newtown Borough took place, Tuesday, at 9 o’clock. It was voted to instruct the warden and burgesses to proceed at once to repair the hose house, erect a tower, and to purchase additional hose. They were also instructed to lay necessary cross walks in the main borough street and to take legal proceeding against the delinquent taxpayers.

State Policeman Varilla, of Bridgeport, was in town, last Saturday, and destroyed all the liquor which was taken out of the Italian shanties here and in Monroe, about two weeks ago.
