HIRSCHL & ADLER JOHN MORRA RECENT PAINTINGS w/1 cut

avv/gs set 1-29 #686335

NEW YORK CITY — Hirschl & Adler Modern will present the opening of “John Morra: Recent Paintings” February 15. Morra’s third solo exhibition at Hirschl & Adler Modern will feature more than 25 representational oil paintings, the subjects of which are still life, landscape and figures. The exhibit is on view through March 17.

Morra has proven himself a leading figure in the world of contemporary American realism. In his new paintings, Morra continues to distance himself from the tenets of post-Modernism, shunning abstraction and embracing more traditional aesthetic values and painterly conventions.

Using the Old Masters as benchmarks, or guides, Morra pays homage to the revered artists who have inspired his works — Vermeer, Chardin and Corot. Like them, he paints from life, in the painstaking manner of the classical atelier — with models and props in a studio setting for portraits and still lifes, and from plein air sketches that are later worked up in the studio for his larger, more complex landscapes.

Morra offers “gems” from his extensive personal collection of bottles and gadgets found in tag sales, metal scraps from junkyards, and even mixers and egg-beaters purchased on line.

Morra’s still lifes also present imperfect farm-fresh fruits and vegetables that take on an uncanny animation, while his landscapes are highly charged compositions of his favorite places.

The gallery is at 21 East 70th Street. For information, www.hirschlandadler.com/modern or 212-535-8810.
