STUTTGART, GERMANY — The important private collection of a former Regensburg art dealer, J.J. Ludwig (1904–2007), will go up for bid at Nagel Auktionen on February 27–28. A focal point of the objects in the collection are works of art of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, early sculpture and religious folk art.

Josef Johann Ludwig was a collector driven by zeal, and an expert dealer serving a large number of museums, with a particular passion for medieval sculpture.

Ludwig was among the founding members of the German Art and Antique Fair in Munich, where he presented select furniture and traditional Arts and Crafts of centuries.

He and his wife, Anni Huttinger from Straubing, the only daughter of a major Bavaria artist family, lived rather reclusively in his hometown of Regensburg, but he remained linked to the art market as a buyer to a ripe old age.

Some 650 objects are going to cross the block, from the traditional collecting areas of furniture to works of art and religious folk art. The offer comprises early European sculptures from the Sixteenth to the Eighteenth Centuries; fine decorative objects made of various materials, such as ivory, serpentine and silver; early ceramics, earthenware, porcelain with painting in black; and tin and old glass. Paintings and religious folk art will also be on sale.

The two-volume catalog documents the major southern German collection that was acquired during the opulent market of the 1950s and 1960s, when passion, connoisseurship and good aesthetic judgment were sought after on the art market.

Ludwig had an infallible instinct for quality and honed his skills to the end — collecting art was the elixir of his life.
