Traffic Safety Measures Needed On Main Street By Wayne and Bernadette Addessi

To the Editor:

The Police Commission, the legal authority, needs to act now. Others need to realize the commission has the legal authority to act for the safety of us all.

Historic towns such as Ridgefield with three traffic lights on its Main Street, near multi-million dollar homes, along with crosswalks and lights that synchronize for pedestrian safety all are set in one of Connecticut's most beautiful towns. I visit there every day since I have my businesses right in the center of town.  Children and families of all ages walk, bike and maneuver safely.  Visit Ridgefield soon to see. Yes much of the same problems exist and even worse sometimes with traffic.

Newtown's hub has become a race track, a death trap, trucks race down the street and cars race through the intersection while residents walk, run and stroll in and across this race track. Just tonight as I headed to the Police Commission meeting I watched as cars raced around the corner at the flagpole. It was dark, no crossing signal, no traffic light and my thought was just another accident waiting to happen.

Will it take a death for change to occur?  It did recently in Ridgefield.  Finally a traffic light was in-stalled!  Let's pray this doesn't happen here folks, and why should it and for what reason? Let's stop complaining about how a traffic light might cause an issue and work to create a safer Main Street for us all.

Oh and while it's quaint lovely homes and generous people line this charming Main Street, so do businesses, a new restaurant and bakery and more traffic than ever before. There are 26,000 of us that have a voice and these two want safety for us all. Think of the kids who traverse here!
