Letters to the Editor

  • Pick Any Other Day For Advocacy

To the Editor: I firmly believe in our Second Amendment rights. I also come from a family of gun-owners and believe that, in certain circumstances, guns can absolutely save lives. However, the recent news of multiple organizations hosting “Guns Save Lives Day” on December 14th, of all days possible, is extremely worrisome. It seems like no fluke that they would happen to choose this particular day (of the 365 they could have chosen from).

  • Newtown Ignores Columbus Day

To the Editor: I am writing this on Columbus Day, celebrated throughout Connecticut, but not in Newtown. There is a parade today in Bridgeport. Another parade in Bethel. The Sycamore will serve brunch with Italian music playing in the background. A quick check of local web sites shows me that Bethel, Brookfield,. Danbury and most Connecticut schools are closed. In New York City, the Columbus Day Parade will be marching in Manhattan! Yet in Newtown, Columbus Day passes with no recognition. Schools are open and parades cannot even be attended by locals.

  • Help Newtown Protect Its Wetlands

To the Editor: I am writing to invite residents of Newtown to join Newtown’s Inland Wetlands Commission. We currently have two vacancies, one for a Democrat and one for a Republican. Unaffiliated voters may also fill either vacancy.

  • Letter of Endorsement

Endorsements for the 2013 local election

  • Vast Majority Of Motorcyclists Are Responsible

To the Editor: As a responsible motorcyclist, I am writing about the incident that occurred in New York City on Sunday, September 29, involving an SUV driver and some motorcyclists. I am troubled by the serious injuries caused by the SUV driver and by the actions of some motorcyclists who apparently decided to take the law into their own hands

  • America Needs A Real Leader

To the Editor: It’s time for another installment of “Name That Shameless Politician.” Who said: “Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit”?

  • Real Heroes

To the Editor: Some people may say that the term “hero” is being used today too much and in too many different types of situations. I am here to tell you that this is certainly not the case with the residents of Newtown, CT.

  • Give Them Anonymity, Not Notoriety

To the Editor: Like so many of us, I have spent a lot of time thinking about how we can to help prevent events like what happened in our town on 12/14. The more I think about it, the more I’ve come to believe that these people who perpetrate these acts really want to be known. They want their names and faces splashed about our TV screens, so that, finally, even in death, they will be noticed.

  • Looking Forward To A Great Day

To the Editor: As a member of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, I’d like you to join us for a very special event on Saturday. Last year’s Passport to Sandy Hook was a great day and we are looking forward to this year’s being bigger and better!

  • A Step Forward

To the Editor: I’d like to thank all those in our community who supported Saturday’s Sandy Hook School referendum. The high turnout and landslide victory were a remarkable show of community support for SHS and all Newtown district students and families, both current and future.
