Police report a two-SUV accident on South Main Street midday on Friday, January 6, in which one of the two vehicles rolled over, landing on its roof at a busy intersection.

Police report that motorist Clinton Scovill, 67, of Newtown was driving a 2012 Jeep Liberty SUV northward on South Main Street about 12:25 pm and was then attempting to make a left turn to enter Country Club Road.

Traffic that was traveling southward on South Main Street in a "left-turn-only" lane, which is intended for motorists seeking to make left turns onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, had stopped, police said. There was space in that lane for northbound motorists seeking to make a left turn onto Country Club Road.

However, at that time, motorist Ejigayehu Wessen, 40, of Newtown, was driving a 2011 Land Rover-brand Range Rover SUV in the "straight-ahead" lane on southbound South Main Street, according to police.

The Jeep then attempted to make the left turn as the Land Rover approached, resulting in the Land Rover striking the Jeep, causing the Jeep to flip over and land on its roof on the southwest corner of South Main Street and Country Club Road, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. Ambulance staffers evaluated both drivers for possible injuries, but neither person was transported to the hospital, police said.

Police said they issued Scovill an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

The accident caused traffic delays in the area. The often-congested offset intersection of South Main Street, Mile Hill Road, and Country Club Road has one of the highest accident rates in town.
