NEW YORK CITY — Stephen Wright’s fourth solo exhibition will take place December 13–January 5 at Gallery Henoch. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, December 13, 6 to 8 pm.

In these paintings, Wright challenges the viewer with the psychological complexity and immediacy of his subjects. The intimacy that Wright has achieved is evident, and with each individual there is a sense of vulnerability resonating, as well as a quiet intensity. The artist emphasizes the surface of his canvases, manipulating layers of paint and leaving evidence of his brushwork.

“As I proceed, I find it more interesting to work out the problems of the image as I go along, instead of planning it first and filling it in with paint,” says Wright. “It feels more like drawing, where improvisation is important and the finished piece reflects the struggles of the process. The inherent risks deepen involvement and create opportunities for discovery that would not have occurred had the concept been mapped out beforehand.”
