Newtown residents Christine Rowan and Kerri Williams spoke before the state’s Appropriations Committee on Friday, March 6, sharing concerns, private stories, and fears regarding the proposed 2016 and 2017 state spending plan presented by Governor Dannel P. Malloy on February 18.
If proposed cuts to the state’s Department of Developmental Services Voluntary Services Program are approved in the budget, Ms Rowan and Ms Williams are fearful of the consequences for their families and others who use these services.

The Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) West Region, Newtown Public Schools, and the Connecticut Family Support Network (CTFSN) are partnering together to sponsor a Spring Resource Fair on Tuesday, April 29.
The event will be held at Newtown High School, 12 Berkshire Road, from 4:30 until 6:30 pm. Individuals and families will have an opportunity to meet and gather information about disability-related supports and services from community vendors and state agencies.

Scott Langner was so excited when he learned he could one day move into an apartment with friends that he soon began talking about the invitations he’d use for his housewarming party.
He’d seen his older brother and sister go off to college and then their own apartments, and his parents hoped that Scott, who has developmental disabilities, autism and a seizure disorder, would eventually be able to move into a home with his friends, with supports funded by the state Department of Developmental Services.
