  • Coyote Sightings Raise Concerns And Cautions

Newtown residents have reported multiple sightings — and hearings— of coyotes and coyote packs to The Newtown Bee in recent weeks. With recent news reports of dogs in Southington attacked by coyotes as their owner walked them on a trail, some people are anxious.

Diana Baxter has seen and heard a large pack of coyotes in the Walnut Tree Hill area the past week, and it makes her nervous.

Newtown Bee Associate Editor Shannon Hicks was all smiles as she reclaimed the Newtown Bee Golden Peeps Award last week, for her Peeps diorama of the 2013 MTV VMA Awards event featuring “Miley Peeprus” and Robin Thicke, twerking, done as tastefully as one can do when re-creating such a performance. Shannon has now won three of the four years of the annual in-house contest (she did not participate last year), in which Bee employees are challenged to get creative with the Easter treats.

  • Be More Cautious As Coyotes Grow Bolder

    To the Editor:

There seems to be an increase in the reported incidence of dogs being attacked by coyotes and not just in rural areas. As with most wildlife, coyotes have been forced into urban areas due to increased land development. As a result, coyotes are becoming less fearful of humans.

  • The Top of the Mountain

There has been a change of venue for Friday night’s family ice skating party. Instead of the temporary rink at Fairfield Hills, the February 7 event has been moved to the Dickinson Park pavilion rink... weather permitting (it’s been one of those weeks, after all.) There is still time to sign up for the event, which will run from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. DJ Kevin Koschel will provide the music, and there will be a small bonfire. There is no charge, but reservations are requested so that organizers know how much hot chocolate will be needed.
