  • Girls’ Golfers Claim Championship In First Season

Nothing, not even chilly-for-the-season, damp conditions, could stop Newtown High School’s first-year varsity girls’ golf team from having its moment in the South-West Conference sun, on June 2. The Nighthawks, behind the top overall golfer, as well as the third-place competitor in the field, captured the conference championship at Orange Hills Country Club.

Newtown shot a 414, and runner-up Joel Barlow of Redding had a 435 as the teams competed for 18 holes under an on-and-off rainfall.

  • Boys’ Golf Team Wins Conference Crown!

Last year was supposed to be the year, but this campaign turned out to be the one for Newtown High School’s boys’ golf team. The Nighthawks surprised defending champion Pomperaug of Southbury, and the rest of the field, to claim the South-West Conference championship at Danbury’s Ridgewood Country Club, on May 29. The Nighthawks shot 322 and the Panthers shot a 336.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling to win this thing,” Newtown Coach Bill Flood said. “This was a total team effort today.”
