A solid team effort led to a one-man offensive outburst. James Carney scored four goals and assisted on another as the third-seeded Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team crushed visiting New Fairfield, the sixth seed, 5-2 in the South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on October 30. Goalkeeper Zach Laros played both halves and made nine saves.

Unbeaten in 11 straight games to close out the regular season, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team certainly couldn’t ask for much more momentum heading into the postseason, but the Nighthawks are doing anything but getting caught up in their own winning ways.
“We’re not that team — we know who we are. We’re just going out and playing hard every game,” Newtown Coach Brian Neumeyer said.

It’s often said that there are good ties and bad ties in sports. For Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team, the 1-1 deadlock with visiting Pomperaug of Southbury, at Treadwell Park on September 29, was perhaps a little of both.

Chasing teams in the standings in the final two weeks of the regular season, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team picked up a pair of crucial wins — defeating visiting Joel Barlow of Redding on October 8 and host Immaculate of Danbury two days later.

After a tough 2-1 loss to visiting Masuk of Monroe at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 6, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team members listened to their coach talk about the importance of earning wins in upcoming games.
“If we do not collect points we will not make the SWC tournament,” he told them.

The second-seeded Newtown High School boys’ soccer team, following 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, including a pair of ten-minute overtimes, prevailed in a round of penalty kicks to defeat visiting and seventh-seeded Masuk of Monroe 1-0 (4-2 in PKs) in a thrilling South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinal round game under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 26.

The Newtown High School boys’ soccer team faced off against Pomeraug of Southbury in a battle for second place in the South-West Conference, at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 17. The two teams got together for Newtown’s senior night in the last regular season home game for the Nighthawks. Newtown came out victorious, 2-0.
