Chasing teams in the standings in the final two weeks of the regular season, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team picked up a pair of crucial wins — defeating visiting Joel Barlow of Redding on October 8 and host Immaculate of Danbury two days later.

After a tough 2-1 loss to visiting Masuk of Monroe at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 6, Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team members listened to their coach talk about the importance of earning wins in upcoming games.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team blanked visiting New Britain 2-0 in the first round of the Class LL State Tournament at Blue & Gold Stadium on November 5 to earn a spot in the November 7 second-round clash with Staples of Westport (6 pm at Blue & Gold Stadium).

The second-seeded Newtown High School boys’ soccer team, following 100 minutes of scoreless soccer, including a pair of ten-minute overtimes, prevailed in a round of penalty kicks to defeat visiting and seventh-seeded Masuk of Monroe 1-0 (4-2 in PKs) in a thrilling South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinal round game under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 26.

The Newtown High School boys’ soccer team faced off against Pomeraug of Southbury in a battle for second place in the South-West Conference, at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 17. The two teams got together for Newtown’s senior night in the last regular season home game for the Nighthawks. Newtown came out victorious, 2-0.

Halloween isn’t here just yet but there have been tricks — hat-tricks for both Clay Gattey and Charlie Poarch in a 6-1 win at Immaculate of Danbury on October 14 — and treats — four lopsided wins over conference foes to begin the month of October — for Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team took the field against New Milford on October 3, and routed the Green Wave 5-1. The Nighthawks then blanked Brookfield 4-0 on October 8 to improve to 6-3-2 this season. Both games were held at Blue & Gold Stadium.
Against New Milford, Newtown came out of the gates quickly, scoring five straight goals until New Milford finally answered in the last ten minutes of the game.

The Nighthawks kept piling up the high-percentage scoring opportunities, only to have Bunnell of Stratford goalkeeper Jeremy Proto make saves or see their shots sail just wide in a boys’ soccer clash at Blue & Gold Stadium on September 30. Finally, about 14 minutes into the second half, a cross attempt by Newtown’s Grant Ricketts ricocheted off a diving Proto and into the net. That fluky goal proved to be the difference as Newtown High School’s booters ended a mini two-game losing skid in a 1-0 win.

Newtown High School’s boys’ soccer team earned at least a point in each of its first five games heading into a September 26 game against Joel Barlow of Redding. For the better part of the afternoon on September 21, the Nighthawks controlled the ball and dominated in scoring opportunities. The Hawks, however, settled for a 1-1 tie with visiting Bethel at Treadwell Park on September 21.
