There is a big hungry cat right around here that is not afraid of an afternoon raid on small animals in bright daylight, I’m told by Ann Ziluck. Ann lives in the Aunt Park Lane area of town, near the bridle trails, and a large bobcat had a smackdown with a squirrel, right off of her deck, this past Saturday evening.

Congratulations to the “Sandy Hook Fredericks Clan.” Sawyer Fredericks, nephew of Bonnie Fredericks, owner of Sandy Hook Hair Co, was named the new champion on NBC’s The Voice Tuesday night. Bonnie hosted a number of The Voice viewing parties this past season, in support of him, at the VFW. Sawyer spent his early years here in Newtown, in case you want to puff up with a little pride. I’m sure all of his local relatives and friends are already doing so!

Springing is one thing cats do well, so I am more than ready to spring into Daylight Saving Time this coming weekend. DST starts at 2 am on Sunday, March 8, so be sure to set your clock ahead one hour when you go to bed on Saturday night. Now if I can only see over the snowbanks by the time spring arrives, in just two weeks. I sense snowdrops and crocus crying out from beneath the mounds of snow.

I craned my neck as best I could, trying to see through the cloud cover during Monday’s Labor Day Parade, but I did not see a single vintage airplane or B-17 flying overhead. Parade Committee President Beth Caldwell cleared up the mystery for me, saying that last minute paperwork due to increased security could not be filed in time to schedule the planes this year, after all. Fortunately, there were plenty of wonderful distractions at ground level to alleviate any brief disappointment over the unexpected cancellation.

The first day of school is one of my favorite days each year. It is so full of promise, and my wish is that promise is fulfilled this year. While I would love to be able to make it around to each bus stop to take photos of the town’s smiling (or shaking in their boots) students on Tuesday, August 27, I am only one cat. However, you can share your first day of school photos with The Bee, to run either in print or in a slideshow online.
