  • Alexander Named New Board Of Education Chair, NHS Administrative Vacancy Also Filled

    The Board of Education unanimously voted to hire David Roach of Southbury to fill a vacant assistant principal position at Newtown High School during its meeting on Tuesday, July 15. Later in the meeting the school board also voted to name Keith Alexander as its new chair.

    “Welcome,” school board Vice Chair Laura Roche said after the vote to hire Mr Roach.

  • Board Of Education Chair Steps Down

    Debbie Leidlein announced at the school board’s meeting on Monday, June 30, that it would be her final meeting as the board’s chair.

    “I’ve had some experiences in my personal life recently that have made it difficult for me to focus 100 percent of my attention to the Board of Education and to being the chair of the Board of Education,” Ms Leidlein announced. “And so, after tonight’s meeting, I will be stepping down as chair at the Board of Education.”

  • One Year Ago, Monroe Stepped Up To Help A Neighbor In Need

    As Interim Superintendent of Schools John Reed said recently, the effort Monroe went through to help Newtown following the events of 12/14 was “complex and extremely important.”

    Within days of the tragic shooting, Newtown First Selectman Pat Llodra announced Monroe’s willingness to help by providing a new home for Sandy Hook staff and students at its then-mothballed Chalk Hill Middle School.

  • Llodra: State Will Accommodate Sandy Hook School Building Schedule

    Following a pair of meetings April 15 and 16, First Selectman Pat Llodra said she has secured a commitment from state officials that they will waive certain procedural requirements to help fast-track any reconstruction or new construction the town proposes related to Sandy Hook School.

    The  school facility has been vacant since the mass shooting tragedy of 12/14. Following the holiday break, classes for SHS students resumed at the former Chalk Hill School in Monroe.
