  • Two-Time Girls’ Tennis Champs Have New-Look Lineup

Coming off consecutive seasons in which they captured South-West Conference championships, the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team will rely on a somewhat new group of players to stay at the top.

The Nighthawks, who went 15-1 in the regular season before successfully defending its SWC crown, then reaching the state tournament’s semifinals, lost eight players from a year ago. Four graduated and two each were claimed through moves out of town and opting not to play.

  • Girls’ Tennis Team Back For Another Title Run

The defending South-West Conference champion Newtown High School girls’ tennis team enters into the 2013 campaign as the team to beat — and not just because the Nighthawks carry SWC bragging rights into this spring. None of the Newtown players graduated from last year’s squad, giving Coach Maureen Mahr a boatload of experience and talent throughout the singles and doubles positions.

The team did lose a trio of players who didn’t return to the program, but it also gained some impressive newcomers, Mahr notes.

  • Girls’ Lacrosse Squad Goes For Yet Another Title

Year in and year out, the Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team has been the squad to beat in the South-West Conference. The Nighthawks captured their eighth straight SWC championship last spring, ensuring that they are the group everybody will strive to take down again this spring.

Although many SWC teams have been getting better in recent years, Newtown Coach Maura Fletcher notes, it doesn’t stand to be the least bit easy for anybody to take bragging rights from the Nighthawks.
