As Reed Intermediate School students entered their school’s cafetorium on Thursday, March 12, many discovered a table with an offering of “Color Burst Salad” on it.
As Chartwells School Dining Services Resident Dietitian Jill Patterson explained, the salad offering was one of the ways Chartwells decided to celebrate March as National Nutrition Month. The monthlong celebration was also promoted by the Connecticut Academy of Nutrition Dietetics.

To mark National Nutrition Month, celebrated throughout March, Chartwells School Dining Services is offering educational tools and differing food options at Newtown’s schools.
According to Chartwells Resident Dietitian Jill Patterson, to mark National Nutrition Month this year, Chartwells is “promoting the health benefits of yogurt.”

As part of its celebration of March being National Nutrition Month, Chartwells offered a beverage tasting station at Reed Intermediate School on Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20.
For the first day of the beverage tasting station, students were offered orange-infused water.
“It’s good,” said sixth grader Olivia Bronsnan, whose sentiments were echoed by others who tried to orange-infused water.
