A line of nets was set up outside at Newtown Middle School on Tuesday, May 5, for a volleyball tournament fundraiser for the American Heart Association.
It was the third annual “Volleyball for Heart Event,” and it had teams of seventh and eighth grade students go up against each other in seven-minute games.
The event was held after school, and NMS physical education teacher Ken Kantor, who organized the event, explained the rules of the tourney while surrounded by the seventh and eighth grade participants.

A joint effort by the Newtown Middle School’s Interact Club and its Student Council collected food items from March 23 to April 30 at the school to donate to the FAITH Food Pantry, a non-ecumenical offering for town residents located at St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook.
The Interact Club also visited the FAITH Food Pantry on May 6 to donate the collection, tour the facility with food pantry Co-Chair Barbara Krell, and help sort the donated items.

The 16th Annual Newtown Night Of Jazz brought the district’s four jazz ensembles together to perform for the community during the evening of Thursday, May 7, at Newtown High School.
The Reed Intermediate School’s Jazz Ensemble performed under the guidance of Directors Robert Nolte and Phil Beierle, the Newtown Middle School Jazz Band performed under the guidance of Director Mark Mahoney, and the Newtown High School Gold and Blue Bands were directed by Kurt Eckhardt.

Tim Green, a former NFL player, a lawyer, and an author, visited Reed Intermediate School and Newtown Middle School on Thursday, April 3, sharing stories and reading inspiration with students at each school.
“It’s my absolute pleasure to introduce to you, Mr Tim Green,” said library/media specialist Pia Ledina before students situated in the school’s cafetorium.

The Board of Education will be sending a letter to state officials in support of funding school-based health care centers, like the one recently opened at Newtown Middle School, in the state’s proposed budget.
As Chair Keith Alexander explained during his board’s Tuesday, April 21, meeting, the letter was drafted by school board Secretary Kathy Hamilton.

Newtown students and jazz bands earned recognition while attending and participating in the University of New Hampshire’s Clark Terry Jazz Festival on March 14.

Newtown Middle School students rehearsed for the upcoming production of Shrek The Musical Jr on Monday, March 16.
Shrek The Musical Jr will be performed on Friday, March 27, at 7 pm, and Saturday, March 28, at 2 pm and 7 pm, and Sunday, March 29, at 2 pm. All performances will be at the middle school, 11 Queen Street.
Tickets are $10 per person and started selling on March 9.

The Newtown Public Schools Recovery Project is sponsoring a Newtown High School, Newtown Middle School, and Reed Intermediate School Parent Forum on “Responsible Use of Social Media” on Thursday, March 19, at Newtown High School’s Room B150, from 7 to 8 pm.
“Responsible Use of Social Media” will share information on effects social media can have on youth, including negative effects.
