    Newtown Middle School students voted for the school’s 2013-14 Student Council after contenders for the different council positions gave prepared speeches on Friday, October 4.

  • Scarecrows To Return To Queen Street

    This year’s My Favorite Scarecrow Contest will mark the 17th year of the annual event, according to Newtown Middle School art teacher Claudia Mitchell.

    Each year eighth grade student groups are challenged to create a larger-than-life scarecrow, designed to frighten away a demon of their choice, that can withstand inclement weather.

  • An Educational Summer For Three NMS Teachers

    Newtown Middle School eighth grade social studies teacher Susan Lang has been applying for grants through the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) off and on for a few years, but this year she convinced a few of her fellow teachers to also apply.

    According to the NEH, it is an independent federal agency that promotes excellence in the humanities by awarding grants and offering programs.

    Newtown Middle School recently released its honor roll for the fourth quarter marking period of the 2012-13 school year. The following seventh and eighth grade students earned their place on the list.

  • NMS Students Awarded For The 2012-13 School Year

    Retiring Newtown Middle School Principal Diane Sherlock welcomed the entire student body and guests to the middle school’s 2012-13 school year’s culminating awards ceremony on Thursday, June 20.

    “It’s my pleasure to welcome you all,” said Ms Sherlock.

    To kick off the assembly eighth grader Rachel Goldman sang the national anthem.

  • School Year Rolls To A Close

    A cloudless afternoon greeted Newtown Middle School students after the last bell rang on Friday, June 21, signaling the close of the school year at NMS.

    Across the district students completed the 2012-13 academic year with a half-day on the first official day of summer.

    Buses were waiting outside NMS, some with festive streamers dangling while others had white hearts or sayings, like "Have a great summer," drawn on windows.

  • NMS Eighth Grade Moves Up And On

    Despite the steady rain and gray skies, there was a celebratory mood at the Newtown Middle School’s Moving-Up Ceremony for graduating eighth grade students, which took place Tuesday, June 18, at Western Connecticut State University’s O’Neil Center.

    Despite an afternoon thunderstorm that brought inclement weather a couple hours before the scheduled 6 pm start, spirits remained high, as the 450 eighth-graders being honored took refuge from the wet weather.
