Families from Newtown and area towns stood in the shade outside Christ the King Lutheran Church on July 27, waiting for their Fresh Air Fund guests to arrive. A bus from New York City carrying children who would be spending time with these families arrived at 3 pm, right on schedule. Holding their signs and watching bus passengers come into view are, from left, Heather and Anna Peck, Leslie Xie, and the Panus family — parents Kellie and Stephen, with sons Jake and Liam.

Newtown resident and Friendly Town Chairperson Marie Athans says The Fresh Air Fund is seeking more families to welcome inner city children to a summer vacation through the Fresh Air Fund this summer. With buses from New York City bringing the first group of children to Newtown and area towns as soon as the end of this month, she is still working to pair more children with local families for July and August.

From the many summer vacation pictures “reflecting the memorable experiences” local families shared with guests from New York City this year, a photo from the Good family of Sandy Hook was a winner.
According to a release from The Fresh Air Fund, of the many pictures snapped this season as inner-city children visited with families hosting them through the program, the Good’s photo “was determined the winner in the Laketime Fun category.”

Has Newtown got enough fresh air, cool lake water, and sunshine to share? Add to that the generosity of welcoming a child from New York City to visit town and pet a horse for the first time, or stand at the top of a hiking trail and listen to the waterfall at Orchard Hill Nature Center. Maybe an inner-city child would love to feel sand underfoot, then the splash of fresh water while taking a swim at Eichler’s Cove.

When Heather and Chris Peck first learned about The Fresh Air Fund in a local newspaper, they thought The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program would be a terrific opportunity for a New York City child. The Pecks knew they lived in a beautiful neighborhood with ample amounts of fresh air, so in 2012 Heather, Chris, and their children Justin, age 11, and Anna, age 9, decided to open their hearts and Newtown home to a Fresh Air child.
