Even though the recent high temperatures have modified, people are still talking about the great heat wave of the summer of ’88. And the cool front came not a minute too soon as far as roofers, farmers and air conditioning repairmen are concerned. This summer there have been 30 days of 90-degree weather with the country gripped in a 44-day period of tropical air. Monday, August 14, was the hottest for that day and marked 11 consecutive days of 90-degree weather, a record.

The Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown, Inc was formed July 27 in a historic action. In less than an hour, with about 30 persons present, incorporation papers and by-laws were ratified and an executive board of directors was elected. The trust was set up to assure the preservation of the 180-year-old meeting house at the head of Church Hill Road.

The Parks and Rec Commission has decided to continue keeping Dickinson Park open late on weekend nights, for teenagers to use as a hangout through Labor Day weekend, provided there continues to be no problems at the park on those nights. The decision came after Park and Rec Director Barbara Kasbarian informed commission members that there have been no problems during the first three weekends teens have used the park on weekend nights.
