Amie came home. Jim and Jo Morris of Russett Road wondered whether they’d ever see their cat again, after they found that boa constrictor on their porch on September 20. When they noticed a slight bulge in the boa, they started to worry. On Saturday, however, Jo said Amie “casually walked in like she hadn’t even been gone.” As for the boa, it was returned to its owner, Greg Oliger of Lakeview Terrace, on September 21.

Authorities still are waiting for laboratory results from samples taken at the scene of The Smoke Shop, which was damaged in a fire August 31. Although the cause of the fire remains suspicious, Deputy Fire Marshal William Halstead said that at this point, he won’t be able to definitively label the fie as arson unless the testing shows that an accelerant was used to start the fire.

John Reed, superintendent of schools, has decided to delay opening of the Middle School until September 7. The school year will be extended for middle school students so they meet minimum requirements of the state. Dr Reed said the four-day delay would allow contractors to complete certain tasks required by the fire and safety codes and the custodial staff to move furniture and properly clean the school.

Even though the recent high temperatures have modified, people are still talking about the great heat wave of the summer of ’88. And the cool front came not a minute too soon as far as roofers, farmers and air conditioning repairmen are concerned. This summer there have been 30 days of 90-degree weather with the country gripped in a 44-day period of tropical air. Monday, August 14, was the hottest for that day and marked 11 consecutive days of 90-degree weather, a record.

The Heritage Preservation Trust of Newtown, Inc was formed July 27 in a historic action. In less than an hour, with about 30 persons present, incorporation papers and by-laws were ratified and an executive board of directors was elected. The trust was set up to assure the preservation of the 180-year-old meeting house at the head of Church Hill Road.
