Following a public hearing on a proposal to greatly expand the Rand-Whitney Container factory at 32 Schoolhouse Hill Road, P&Z members on September 17 conditionally approved the project for the 18.7-acre site.
P&Z members agreed that the plans to increase the factory’s size from 127,500 square feet to 308,000 square feet meet the standards and criteria for site development plan approval.

A major Hawleyville development proposal, which would include a 180-unit multifamily housing complex, a diner, and a church on land off Hawleyville Road (Route 25), has drawn many traffic-related questions and comments from residents of that area.
Those residents spoke at a heavily attended August 20 Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) meeting that included two public hearings on different aspects of the development project proposed for land near the Exit 9 interchange of Interstate 84.

Following discussion at an August 20 meeting, Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) members unanimously approved the construction of the River Walk at Sandy Hook Village, a 65-unit condominium complex planned for the west side of Washington Avenue in Sandy Hook Center, near the Pootatuck River.
Voting in favor of the housing project were P&Z Chairman Robert Mulholland and members Michael Porco, Sr, Jim Swift, Frank Corigliano, and Fredrick Taylor.

Following a June 19 public hearing, Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) members declined to revise the zoning regulations for the M-2A (Industrial) zone located in Hawleyville, as had been requested by the Economic Development Commission (EDC).
The EDC had sought to have the P&Z add three uses to the list of allowed land uses in the M-2A zone — distribution centers, warehouses, and/or wholesale businesses.

The verb prostitute, according to Collins Thesaurus, means to “cheapen, sell out, pervert, devalue, squander, demean, debase, profane, or misapply.”
This is exactly what seems to be evolving at Fairfield Hills. Our first selectman told the Board of Selectman at their most recent meeting that “those interested in projects at Fairfield Hills have said retail or commercial enterprises cannot survive without a residential component.”

Following lengthy discussion, Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) members have approved an update to the Fairfield Hills Master Plan, a document intended to generally guide future land use at Fairfield Hills, where the town bought 186 acres and many buildings from the state for $3.9 million in 2004.
The town is in the protracted process of redeveloping the property in the geographic center of town, which formerly served as the psychiatric institution known as Fairfield State Hospital.

A development firm has withdrawn from Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) consideration its controversial proposal for a time extension on the use of temporary office space on Mt Pleasant Road (Route 6) in Hawleyville.
However, still pending before the P&Z are three other controversial zoning proposals that have drawn fire from residents at Liberty at Newtown, an age-restricted, 96-unit condominium complex at 178 Mt Pleasant Road.

Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) members are reviewing local economic development information for inclusion in the decennial update of the Town Plan of Conservation and Development.
At an April 4 P&Z session, Elizabeth Stocker, town director of economic and community development, reported to P&Z members on economic development that has occurred since the 2004 town plan was published, as well as the prospects for continued economic growth.
