To the Editor:
We have lived in Newtown since 1968, raised two children here, and I taught 33 years in our school system. The Cyrenius Booth Library has been a constant source of learning, fine reading, pleasure and friendship. Now that my husband and I are retired, the library seems like an extension of our home.

To the Editor:
There are times when we have to question and oppose the thinking and decisions that are made by those entrusted with the responsibility to provide the best operating environment for the residents of Newtown. This is especially true in the case of the new library director, Shawn Fields, who has a plan to overhaul the existing layout of the library to fit into his concept of what our library should resemble in his mind.

Shawn Fields, the director of the C.H. Booth Library as of July 1, enthusiastically and thoroughly discussed the book he is currently reading, Guns, Germs, and Steel, by anthropologist Jared Diamond, in his first interview with The Bee, July 10. The book examines the different factors that effect populations as it seeks to answer the question of why civilization is the way it is, and the numerous reasons that contribute to why civilizations thrive or fail, from historical, biological, and anthropological approaches.

Dozens of people gathered at a special reception, Friday afternoon, June 26, to honor departing C.H. Booth Library director Janet Woycik. Hosted by the library Board of Directors, guests included many who have rubbed shoulders with Ms Woycik over the years, including staff, former staff, and town officials. All were there to celebrate Ms Woycik’s three decades plus of dedication, and to send her off knowing how much she was appreciated.

The Board of Trustees of Newtown’s C.H. Booth Library announces that Shawn R. Fields has been selected as the new library director, as of July 1. The search for a new director began last fall after longtime director Janet Woycik announced that she intended to retire June 30, 2013.
