  • Halstead Honored By Board Of Fire Commissioners

    Bill Halstead was honored by the Board of Fire Commissioners at the conclusion of the board’s meeting on March 23.

    Mr Halstead, who serves as chief of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company and is also the town’s fire marshal, celebrated his 50th anniversary as a firefighter in January. Once the business meeting was finished Monday night, the commissioners surprised Mr Halstead with the honor.

    Commissioner Kevin Cragin spoke on behalf of the board.

    Fire officials, who are considering a proposed move of local emergency radio dispatching from Town Hall South to a regional dispatching center in Prospect about 25 miles away, are seeking answers to questions about what effects, positive and negative, such a change might hold in terms of Newtown fire protection.

  • Regionalized Emergency Dispatching Proposal Draws More Fire

    The Newtown Police Union opposes a town proposal that would have municipal emergency radio dispatching for 911, police, fire, and ambulance calls regionalized at a privately owned dispatching center in Prospect.

    The town has proposed regionalization as a cost-savings measure which would reduce spending by approximately $149,000 annually.

  • Cookies For The Commissioners (And Firefighters)

    Hannah Warshaw opened the March 25 Board of Fire Commissioners meeting by presenting a gift to the commissioners: more than 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies, to be distributed among Newtown’s fire companies.
