The Newtown Public Schools announced Tuesday afternoon that due to the higher temperatures, after-school activities on Tuesday, September 8, and Wednesday, September 9, and the school day on Wednesday, September 9, are being changed.

Newtown Public Works crews spent the majority of Saturday working to clear the town’s roads of a quick snowstorm that dropped approximately 6-8 inches of snow and a small amount of freezing rain on Newtown before the storm cleared by late morning. Now it looks like the same employees who spent up to 15 hours working on January 24 need to get ready for a second storm, and this one may be very serious. The National Weather Service this afternoon has upgraded a Winter Storm Watch that had included most of Fairfield County to a Blizzard Warning.

Under the tutelage of creative writing instructor Chris Belden, inmates of Garner Correctional Institute have published three editions of a literary magazine, Sentences. Issue number 4 is ready to be printed, with more original prose and poetry, Chris says, but funding is needed. “If just 30 people donate $10 each we will be able to print enough copies to distribute to the inmates,” he tells me, and anyone who donates $10 will receive a copy.

As soon as residents cleared snow from walkways, streets, and lots that blanketed the town on Monday, the sky opened up again. Wednesday morning brought a second round of path and driveway clearing, as between six and nine inches of snow topped Monday’s precipitation. By early afternoon Wednesday, the blustery white flakes turned into rain.

To the Editor:
After clearing my driveway, shoveling walks and clearing snow off the car, what was left was the three feet of snow at the foot of the driveway and at least that far into the street. As the rain came in, I headed indoors for a much needed break and the hopes the rain will stop before we lost daylight.

Sean and Isabelle Caron were enjoying the fresh snow that arrived in Newtown before daybreak Monday, sledding in their front yard. A storm that was to bring a few inches of snow to the region had dropped up to six inches in different areas of town by late afternoon. More snow is forecast for Tuesday night.
