Russo And Godfrey Lead Hawks In SWC Track And Field Championships

Led by first-place finishes by Lauren Russo and Jack Godfrey, as well as many other standout individual performances, Newtown High School's girls' and boys' indoor track and field teams both placed fourth in the South-West Conference championships, held at New Haven's Floyd Little Athletic Center, on February 6.

The girls scored 53 points and the boys had 54. Weston, with 101 points, won the girls' completion; Masuk of Monroe, with 77, claimed the boys' title. There were ten girls' teams and a dozen boys' squads.

Russo won the pole vault event with a 10-06 performance in the finals. Godfrey was first in the shot-put event with a throw of 48-07.

Makenna Cerney was third in the 55 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 9.44; and Audrey Benson was sixth in 9.86. Erin Tressler was fifth in the 1000 meter run in a time of 3:07.10; and Madison Findley came in eighth in 3:22.90.

Sarah Mawdsley and Tressler had a four-five finish in the 1600, with times of 5:26.62 and 5:29.40. Sara Dowling placed fifth in the 300 with a time of 44.84. Mawdsley was second in the 3200, clocking in with a time of 11:38.72; Taylor Pare placed sixth in the race in 12:17.68; and Willow Pears placed tenth in 13:24.63. In the 600, Sarah Houle and Camryn Cicarelli were ninth and tenth in times of 1:48.27 and 1:48.70.

The girls' sprint medley relay team of Grace Pettinelli, Cerney, Tressler, and Findley was third in 4:37.64. The 4x400 relay team of Houle, Camryn Cicarelli, Cerney, and Pettinelli was third in 4:27.14.

Marley Marston was fourth in the shot-put event with a throw of 29-07.75. Dowling came in sixth in the long jump competition with a leap of 15-04.

On the boys' side, Cole Terry placed second in the 55 meter hurdles, finishing in 8.21; and Brett Deri was seventh in 8.76. In the 1000, Christian Lestik placed seventh with a time of 2:46.90. Joel Duval was fourth in the 1600, in a time of 4:44.30; and Brenden Reeds came in sixth in 4:45.24. James Carney was tenth in the 300 with a time of 38.93. Ethan Burg placed tenth in the 3200 in 10:49.12. Erik Benson placed fourth in the shot-put throw with a 37-06.25.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Jack Lavelle, Kevin Arther, Cormac Roe, and Carney placed fifth in a time of 1:41.48. The 4x800 relay team comprising Ethan Burg, Richard Linley, Brenden Reeds, and Joel Duval was runner-up in 8:40.70. In the 4x400 relay race, the team of Jermane Anyoha, Duval, Arther, and Carney was fifth in 3:47.69. The boys' sprint medley relay squad of Jack Lavalle, Roe, Arther, and Linley was fourth in 3:56.64.

Terry and Adam Manes placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the long jump with distances of 19-03.75 and 18-02.25. Terry was third in the high jump competition with a 5-10 effort in the finals. Benson placed fourth in the shot-put competition with a throw of 37-06.25. Dylan Lew placed third in the pole vault event with a performance of 11-00 in the finals; and Jacob Steinebrey placed eighth with a 9-00.
