Drivers traveling on Berkshire Road (Route 34) near its intersections with Bennetts Bridge and Grays Plain roads early Monday evening were detoured over the secondary roads after a dump truck that was being towed rolled onto its side. When Mr Cocivi attempted to turn from Grays Plain onto Berkshire Road shortly after 5 pm, to head south on Berkshire, the materials in the bed of the dump truck being towed shifted. The weight of the shifting load, and the sharpness of the corner, caused the dump truck that was being towed to tilt, and then roll onto its side. The cotter pin holding the trailer in place appeared to malfunction, which allowed the trailer and truck to roll onto its side. The '92 Mack, which was doing the towing, did not roll, however. Mr Cocivi was uninjured, and there were no vehicles in the oncoming traffic lane at that time. Newtown Police, Sandy Hook firefighters, State of Connecticut road crews, and a wrecker crew from Modzelewski's all responded to the scene. Detours were in place for nearly two hours while the trucks and debris were cleared. Newtown Police said on August 11 that no enforcement action was planned. (Bee Photo, Hicks)
