Geraldine “Gerri” Cornell, 73, of Hayes, Va., died peacefully June 30, with family by her side, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg, Va. Ms Cornell was a native of Connecticut and retired from a long career at Pitney Bowes.She was a member of Newtown United Methodist Church, Sandy Hook, and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star.
James A. Connelly, Jr, 44, of the Westville section of New Haven, formerly of Newtown, died peacefully at his home July 2, with his faithful German shepherd, Maggie, by his side. He was born in Bridgeport, December 15, 1969.
Geraldine “Gerri” (Oberg) Cornell, 73, died peacefully with family by her side on June 30, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg, Va. Among her survivors is a daughter and son-in law, Tracy and Brian Kean of Newtown. She is also survived by another daughter, Rebecca Slattery, and her husband William of Gloucester, Va., and a son, David Cornell, and his wife JoAnne, of Bethel; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Jeanne Granniss; a brother, Richard Oberg; a host of nieces and nephews, and her canine companions, Cricket and KC. Funeral services, to be officiated by the Reverend Mel Kawakami, will be held at 11 am Friday, July 11, at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook, with interment to follow in Zoar Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 10, from 4 until 7 pm, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street in Newtown.
Richard J. Cavanaugh, 53, of the Botsford section of Newtown, died June 25 at Danbury Hospital following a long illness. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy (Quinn) Cavanaugh of Botsford; his two older sisters, Susan C. Elmore of Londonderry, N.H., and Linda M. Cavanaugh of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, and an older brother, Robert D. Cavanaugh of Pittsford, Vt.
Philip R. Linley, 88, of Fairfield, died on June 27 at St Vincent’s Hospital. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Dorothy; his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Deb Linley of Newtown, two grandsons he thought the world of, Brett and Richard; and several nieces and nephews.
Margaret Anne “Margy” Henderson, 72, died peacefully on June 25 in Shelburne, Vt., with the love and care of family, friends, and staff at Wake Robin. She was born on December 8, 1941, in Richmond, Va., grew up in Schenectady, N.Y., and lived nearly 40 years in and around Newtown before retiring to Wake Robin in 2012. Margy was a devoted parishioner of Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown.
Kimberly Elaine (Arnold) Scott, 53, of Hilliard, Ohio, and previously Newtown, died May 28 in Hilliard. She is survived by her husband David Scott, daughter Samantha Scott and son Ryan Scott of Hilliard; her parents, April and Richard Arnold of Newtown; a brother, Richard Arnold, also of Newtown; and a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Jeffrey Warner of Torrington.
James H. Shortt, 86, of Sandy Hook, “The Commander,” died peacefully June 5 at Village Crest Health and Rehabilitation Center, New Milford. He was the husband of Laura J. Shortt, who died in 2002. He grew up on the family dairy farm in Southbury and enlisted in the US Army at the age of 18, serving with the rank of staff sergeant during the Korean War.
