Newtown High School’s hockey team outscored host Conard 8-6 in the qualifying round of the Division II state tournament on March 4. The game was played at Veterans Memorial Skating Rink in West Hartford. Conard was seeded 16th and Newtown 17th.
Tyler Hanley and Parker Rodbell both scored twice to lift the Nighthawks into a first-round clash with top-seeded Amity of Woodbridge the next night at Bennett Rink in West Haven.
Newtown’s Dan Harrison, Matt Sabia, Evan Isaacs, and Cooper McLean all had goals in the win over Conard. Isaacs and Hanley both recorded four assists, Sabia had two assists, and Chris Erikson, McLean, and Connor Hanley also had helpers.
Newtown goaltender Patrick McLoughlin made 18 saves. Conard was 7-11-2, and Newtown skated into the playoffs with a 10-10 mark. Amity is 13-7 and doesn’t hold the highest winning percentage of the D-II qualifiers, but earned the top seed based on the state’s points system, with teams earning more points in wins against teams in higher divisions.
