NYFS Seeking Volunteers For Independent Living Day 2013

An annual event for Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS), Independent Living Day allows low- to moderate-income seniors and disabled residents to remain in their homes independently for longer periods of time by receiving assistance with basic home upkeep, free of charge. Additionally, NYFS provides the seniors with a link to the outside community making them feel welcomed and cared for as part of the larger community.

Independent Living Day 2013 will be Saturday, April 27, and NYFS is looking for volunteers to help.

(Please note the date of the event was printed incorrectly in the March 1, 2013 issue of The Newtown Bee. The above date is the correct one.)

Many senior citizens in Newtown face increased costs of living without the ability to make additional money. In order to live independently, they need assistance from their community.

As part of NYFS’s continuum of care, Independent Living Day focuses on providing the following: mulch spreading, errands, organizing closets and garages, mowing, clearing debris from walkways, discarding expired food and newspapers, changing floodlights, and disinfecting bathrooms and other living areas to clear away dust and mold.

This yearly NYFS service allows seniors an increased chance of living longer in their own homes. NYFS provides services to any senior or disabled resident in Newtown but Independent Living Day focuses primarily on Nunnawauk Meadows, a restricted income over-60 housing development. More than 40 individuals were served from this neighborhood last year.

Work shifts will run from 9:30 to 11:30 am and 12:30 to 2:30 pm. Volunteers are asked to report to NYFS, 15 Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook, at 9 am for breakfast and sign-in before heading to the work site in the morning, or by noon for lunch and sign-in for the afternoon time slot.

Deadline to sign up is Friday, April 19.

Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact Kaitlyn Johnson at 203-270-4335 or KJohnson@newtownyouthandfamilyservices.org. Additional information about Independent Living Day is also available from Ms Johnson.
