During its final meeting of the school year, on Monday, June 9, members of the Hawley Kids Care Club had a surprise for retiring Principal Jo-Ann Peters-Edmondson.
The Kids Care Club meets once a month before school, and it has spent the school year doing helpful activities for the community. According to co-advisor and Hawley parent Lisa Burbank and a number of the club’s students, projects this school year have included gathering donations for the town Social Services food bank, hosting a toy drive for daycare centers in need in Bridgeport, creating Hearts of Hope, and crafting butterflies as gifts for school teachers.
During its meeting in May, students decorated squares of fabric as part of the surprise for Ms Peters-Edmondson. Ms Burbank took the squares home and crafted a bag with to present to Ms Peters-Edmondson during the club’s June meeting.
When the bag was presented to Ms Peters-Edmondson, Ms Burbank explained the students decorated each square with an image of one of Ms Peters-Edmondson’s favorite things or activities.
One square had a drawing of a watering can and had the words “Gardening! Rocks!” Another showed flip-flops and word “Florida.” And another had a symbol for Nantucket.
“This is mine!” one student said while standing next to her principal and pointing. “It’s you at the beach.”
The square showed Ms Peters-Edmondson’s likeness relaxing at a beach with coffee and chocolate.
“Thank you so much,” Ms Peters-Edmondson said to all of the students.
