To publicly show their support for expanded federal gun control laws, members of the Newtown Action Alliance conducted a demonstration starting midday Wednesday on the front steps of Edmond Town Hall at 45 Main Street.
The alliance termed the event, “Filibuster The Filibuster: They Deserve A Vote,” in response to a threatened filibuster in the US Senate by Republican senators who oppose expanding federal gun control laws.
To dramatize their viewpoint, members of the action alliance read from a list of 3,300 people in the US who have died as a result of gun violence since December 14, 2012.
The alliance is a local ad hoc group that formed as a result of the incidents of December 14.
On that date, a 20-year-old Sandy Hook gunman first shot his mother at their home, and then killed 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School before killing himself.
Po Murray, a leader of the alliance, said that alliance members would read the 3,300 names of the gun violence victims through Wednesday night and into Thursday morning from a podium in front of the town hall to demonstrate their commitment to expanded gun control laws.
Any attempt by filibustering in the US Senate to stop a vote on measures intended to reduce gun violence is not acceptable, according to a statement from the alliance.
Alliance members recently held a demonstration in front of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry lobby group located at 11 Mile Hill Road, to stress their desire for reduced gun violence.
