Benefit Concert To Promote Autism Awareness

Families United in Newtown (FUN) will present a night of classical music on Saturday, April 27, starting at 7:30 pm, at Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook.

This concert will feature the music of Albeniz, Bach, Debussy, Sibelius, and Tàrrega. Performers will include Lindsey Jones on violin, Yossi Kohrman-Glaser on guitar, Wesley Morlock on piano, and Tristan Speed, also playing the guitar.

Admission is free, but FUN will be accepting donations at the door for continued support of its program as well as autism awareness efforts. Light refreshments will be served after the event, giving the audience a chance to meet and interact with the performers.

Families United in Newtown was founded in 2009 as a recreation program in Memory of Tyler Jones. The group holds monthly meetings for families with special needs children from the surrounding area to get together in a safe place for their kids to interact and have some play time. The ultimate goal of FUN is to provide an outlet for families with special needs children as well as promote Autism Awareness within the community.

This month’s FUN meeting will be held prior to the concert on Saturday, April 27, from 4 to 6 pm, at The Church of Latter-Day Saints, 16 Saw Mill Road in Newtown.

April is Autism Awareness Month, and current facts show that 1 in 50 children are being diagnosed with some form of Autism. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.

ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.

Autism Awareness Pins are being be sold around Newtown and Sandy Hook this month. The puzzle piece pins were hand-crafted by special needs students and Newtown High School Honors Society students.
