Nighthawk Swimmers Too Much For Green Wave

Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team defeated visiting New Milford Green Wave 103-70, on September 30. Mary Hufziger broke her own pool record in the 100 yard freestyle race, clocking in with a time of 53.97 to earn one of Newtown's eight first-place finishes in swimming events.The Bee.

The 200 medley relay team of Hufziger, Grace Bertsche, Olivia Renkert, and Lianna Perazzo was first in a time of 2:04.03.

Maddie Carter won the 200 free in a time of 2:10.35, earned the top spot in the 100 butterfly race, making her final touch in 1:06.41, and took top honors in the 100 breaststroke race in 1:16.41.

Bertsche won the 500 free in 6:13.38. Hufziger was first in the 100 backstroke race in 1:01.34.

The 400 free relay team of Emma Riebe, Perazzo, Renkert, and Hufziger had the fastest time, finishing in 4:12.14.

Newtown sealed the team win after the 100 backstroke race, and exhibitioned the final two events, the 100 breaststroke and 400 relay.

Because this was Newtown's second meet of the week, Coach Becky Osborne moved some swimmers into events in which they typically don't compete.

"We mixed people into different events today so they wouldn't burn out," the coach said. "They did very well. In the events they don't normally race in, they did well."
