Newtown High School students will have artwork in two upcoming art shows — the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show and the 22nd Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition.

The Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show is being held at the Silpe Gallery at Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, 200 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford, through February 1. Artwork went on display January 13 for the show. The show is open to the public Monday to Friday, from 10 am to 4 pm, and on weekends, from noon to 4 pm.

Students with artwork on display for the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show are Anna LaBanca, who has a painting, “Caroline’s Window” on display; Moira McKinley, whose painting “Water in Oil” is on display; Maddie Mixon, who has a ceramic and glass piece, “Rustic Midnight” on display; Katarina Rosen, who has a ceramic and glass piece on display, “Textures;” Hannah Ruhs, whose painting “Still Life with Cow Skull” is on display; Kate Sailer, with a drawing and illustration, “Hiding,” on display; and Danielle Wassmer’s painting “A Slice of Life.” An awards ceremony will take place January 27.

The 22nd Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition will be held at the Minneapolis Conventional Center, Minneapolis, Minn., March 27 to 29, according to the National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation’s website, k12clay.org. The Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition is an annual juried ceramic competition for kindergarten through twelfth grade students, according to the National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition Foundation. It was designed to showcase the best student ceramic work made in the country, and the exhibition takes place in a different city each year in conjunction with the annual conference of the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA). Awards from the show are announced following the exhibition.

Students who will have artwork on display for the 22nd Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition are Maddie Mixon, with “Rustic Midnight;” Hannah Sepp, with “Sgraffito Mandola;” Alyssa Bailey, with “Shark Nails;” Sarah Widman, with “Modern Ruin;” Rebecca McHugh, with “Japanese Pagoda;” and Kateria Rosen, with “Textures.”

All of the students are in NHS art teacher Carol Pelligra’s classes. Before the artwork was put on display for the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards, students gathered in an art room at NHS to discuss their works of art on January 9.

Moira McKinley said she loves creating artwork, and for her piece, “Water in Oil,” she found inspiration from watercolor paint palettes.

For her piece, “Caroline’s Window,” Anna LaBanca said, “It was cool to be able to paint something based on a photograph that was mine.”

Danielle Wassmer said her painting, “A Slice of Life,” was inspired by a photograph from family members in the Philippines.

Ms Pelligra said the students are a “stunning group” of artists, and they are a delight to work with. She also noted that this year, NHS has more works of art in the Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards show than in any other year.
