Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team walloped South-West Conference rival Bethel 15-5 on Treadwell Park on April 18, then fell 9-6 to nonconference foe Glastonbury at Blue & Gold Stadium two days later. The Nighthawks fell 9-4 to Joel Barlow of Redding on April 24 to drop to 3-5 overall.
In the win over Bethel, Deegan Beauchemin and Tom Bauer both scored four goals, and Dan Hebert hit the back of the net three times. Tyler Hanley had seven ground ball scoops, and Jack Kearney and Graham Derrickson both compiled six. Goaltenders Evan Isaacs and John Rospenda combined to make just six saves as the Nighthawks controlled the flow of the game.
“We came out and we played well offensively and defensively,” Newtown Coach Glenn Adams said. “It was good to string a couple of wins together to build our confidence here.”
Newtown was coming off an 8-2 win at Weston after losing three consecutive contests. The Nighthawks’ bid to make it three wins in a row fell short against a challenging Glastonbury squad.
Down 9-5 early in the fourth quarter, a goal by Bauer got the Nighthawks to within 9-6 with 9:12 to play. Newtown’s Hanley got possession off the ensuing faceoff, and the Hawks had multiple chances to carve deeper into the deficit, but couldn’t make it any closer.
“We need to shoot the ball better. We generated plenty of shots,” said Adams, adding that too many of those bids to score were into the chest of Glastonbury goaltender Jon Kaplan (12 saves).
Newtown got two goals each from Bauer and Alec Beauchemin in the loss to Glastonbury. Hanley had a whopping 20 of his team’s 41 ground ball pickups.
Visiting Barlow improved to 7-0 this spring by jumping out to a 3-0 lead after one quarter and never looking back. Deegan Beauchemin scored twice in the loss.
Newtown is back on the road for four straight contests, beginning with a Saturday, April 27, visit to West Springfield, Mass. The Hawks return home on May 7 when New Milford visits Blue & Gold for a 7 pm battle. Two days later rival Masuk of Monroe comes to Treadwell Park for a 4 pm contest.
