  • Theater Review: Great Production In Sherman About The Other Red-Headed Orphan

    The Sherman Playhouse is currently offering an adaptation of "Anne of Green Gables," in which three of L.M. Montgomery's stories have been melded into one play. It is, writes The Newtown Bee Theater Reviewer Julie Stern, "a great show to see with kids, because it is as much fun to watch them be totally absorbed as it is to follow the performers on the stage." Performances continue weekends, including one Sunday afternoon matinee, until July 27.

  • Auditions For ‘Tom, Dick And Harry,’ July 15-16 For Town Players

    Town Players of Newtown will host auditions for Tom, Dick And Harry, by masters of British farce, Ray and Michael Cooney, on Monday and Tuesday, July 15-16. Auditions will run from 7:30 to 9 pm each night. Gene Golaszewski will direct the production, which calls for six men and three women of various ages. Rehearsals will begin the week of July 21. Performances begin September 13, Friday and Saturday evenings, with two Sunday matinees, through October 5, for a total of ten performances.

  • ‘From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert For Sandy Hook’ To Air On Select Public Television Stations In July

    “From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert For Sandy Hook”, which took place on January 28, at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, will begin airing on select public television stations throughout the tri-state area in July. “From Broadway With Love” was a concert of healing for the Newtown community where composers, musicians and more than 100 stars of Broadway came together with over 300 students from several Newtown dance groups, the Sandy Hook Elementary School third and fourth grades, and the Newtown High School Chamber Choir.

  • Watercolor Landscape Demo, July 10 At Meeting House

    The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Adele Moros painting a watercolor landscape at a meeting of SCAN on Wednesday, ly 10, at 7:30 pm. This demo will take place in the lower meeting room at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole). It is not necessary to be a member of SCAN to attend. Admission is free.

  • Openings Still Available for Summer History Camp

    Enrollment for the Newtown Historical Society’s 8th Annual Summer History Camp is nearing full capacity for the 2013 season, but its not too late to enroll your child for a week of interactive colonial-era exploration and fun. Vacancies for the afternoon session, which runs from 1 to 4 pm, during the week of July 15-19 are still available for children between the ages of 8 to 10.

  • Stratford School Students’ Magical Garden Float Honors Sandy Hook

    On a Monday evening in April, more than 100 parents and students gathered at Flood Middle School in Stratford for an event called “Flowers for the Float.” Working with The Barnum Festival, the school had decided to build a tribute float to honor the victims of 12/14. In memory of the 26 children and educators who lost their lives at Sandy Hook School, the Stratford group designed and dedicated the float they called “We Choose Love.” The work session in April was to create hundreds of duct tape flowers and leaves for the float, which was to be a part of Stratford’s Memorial Day Parade. The float will return to the roads this weekend, when it is part of The Barnum Festival’s Great Street Parade on Sunday, June 30.

  • Absolut Gallery To Feature Mixed Media Works By Angelo Perrone

    The Absolut Gallery at The Inn at Newtown will present an exhibition of mixed media paintings by Angelo Perrone, June 27 to August 31. The public is invited to the opening reception at the gallery on Thursday, June 27, from 6 to 8 pm. The reception will feature live entertainment by The Blue Yodels, complementary hors d’oeuvres and cocktails served courtesy of Executive Chef Carlos Marquez and Absolut Vodka. Mr Perrone has generously donated 38 original paintings for the exhibition, and has promised that 100% of sales from the show will be donated to Newtown Police Union and Newtown Lions Club for the mental health of those affected by 12/14.
