Janet (Lewis) Spence Stiewing, 89, died peacefully at Geer Nursing on February 14. She was the mother of Jim Stiewing of Newtown and Monica (Stiewing) Duhancik of Sandy Hook
Janet was born October 25, 1923, in Bridgeport, to Grace (Smith) and Otis P. Lewis.
She graduated from Bryant College and then enlisted in the United States Navy where she worked as an aviation machinist. She married John Campbell Spence in 1943, with whom she had two daughters. Following his passing she married Richard B. Stiewing in 1960. She adopted his five children, and also gave birth to their son.
Mrs Stiewing retired from Dupont where she worked for many years and also had worked for Ennis McQuail at his law practice in Newtown. She raised her family in Newtown, and retired to Falls Village in 1986.
She was an active member of Falls Village Congregational Church. She enjoyed her gardens, bird watching, and a great book. Mrs Stiewing especially loved her 11 grandchildren and her eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to Jim Stiewing and his wife Deb, and Monica Dunancik and her husband Tim, Mrs Stiewing is survived by another son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Candy Stiewing of Falls Village; her daughters and their spouses Pamela (Spence) and Ferd Flores of Tepoztlan, Mexico, Darcelle (Spence) O’Connor of Eagle, Colo., Martha (Stiewing) Corbett, Mary Ellen (Stiewing) and Joe Treffs of Highland Falls, N.Y.; and her brother and sister-in-law, Griffin and Peg Lewis of Norwalk.
A Celebration of Life Gathering was held for Mrs Stiewing at The Falls Village Inn on Tuesday, February 19. Donations in the memory of Mrs Stiewing may be sent to Falls Village Congregational Church, Beebe Hill Road, Falls Village CT 06031.
