Leave School Protection To The Police

To the Editor:

As a former Newtown Police Commissioner I believe it is Newtown's responsibility to protect our residents, all our residents, whether they are in school or at the Senior Center.

The Police Department is the best trained and where the responsibility should be. If our leaders believe that there is a real danger to our students, then school resource officers can accomplish much more than security guards: they are true professionals.

From a protection point of view security guards seem to me ineffective and a waste of taxpayer's dollars. In either case, school resource officers or security guards, they should be reporting to the Police Department. The Police Department has the training and expertise to manage these resources. The Board of Education and the School System should educate and the Board of Selectmen and the Police Department should protect.
