Chartwells Offers Beverage Tasting Station At Reed

As part of its celebration of March being National Nutrition Month, Chartwells offered a beverage tasting station at Reed Intermediate School on Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20.

For the first day of the beverage tasting station, students were offered orange-infused water.

“It’s good,” said sixth grader Olivia Bronsnan, whose sentiments were echoed by others who tried to orange-infused water.

Chartwells’ theme for National Nutrition Month is “Think Your Drink.” This theme encourages everyone to drink more water and fewer sugar-sweetened beverages, according to Chartwells.

Sugar-sweetened beverages include sodas, sweetened iced tea, lemonade, juice drinks (that are not 100 percent juice), and any beverage that is sweetened with sugar. 

Chartwells resident dietitian Jill Patterson also shared recipes for infused water for families to use at home.

Ms Patterson also said Chartwells will be celebrating National Nutrition Month by handing out “Water is the Way To Go!” bookmarks to every Newtown Elementary School student in March.

 Beverage tasting stations were also offered at Newtown Middle School and Newtown High School on March 19 and March 20.

Orange-Infused Water

Ingredients: 3 large oranges, sliced; 1 gallon of water.

Directions: Place orange slices in a large pitcher/container. Add water. Cover and refrigerate for two hours.  Serve as desired.

Cucumber & Mint-Infused Water

Ingredients: 4 fresh mint leaves; 15 thin slices cucumber; 1 gallon of water

Directions: Place cucumbers and mint in a large pitcher/container. Add water. Cover and refrigerate for two hours. Serve as desired.
