Newtown native Paul VanderWende, 57, died Friday, March 22, after a long battle with cancer.
Mr VanderWende is survived by his mother, Lorraine VanderWende, of Newtown; his wife Sarah VanderWende, of Antrim, N.H.; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Shelley VanderWende; and an aunt and uncle, Sherley and Edward Asid.
In addition to the abovementioned, Mr VanderWende is survived by a stepson and wife; two grandsons; cousins; a nephew and a niece. His father, Paul VanderWende III, predeceased him.
While growing up, Mr VanderWende was a member of Newtown Cub Scout Den 70, of which his mother was Den Mother for three years. He was also a firefighter with Hook & Ladder Fire Co for a few years.
Mr VanderWende graduated from Newtown High School in 1974, with the first class to complete all four years of their high school career in the new high school building.
He was an avid fisherman, and the author of two books on the subject.
Jellison Funeral Home, 25 Concord Street in Peterborough, N.H., will host calling hours Friday, April 5, from 5 to 7 pm. A funeral for Mr VanderWende is scheduled at First Presbyterian Church in Antrim, N.H., Saturday, April 6, at 2 pm.
