The Newtown Memorial Fund, Inc. has announced a long term fundraising partnership with Pura Vida Bracelets, a La Jolla, Calif., based company and designer of stylish Costa Rican handmade string bracelets. The exclusive Sandy Hook Elementary Memorial bracelet, created in response to 12/14, will be sold with all proceeds benefiting the Newtown Memorial Fund.
The bracelets are $5 each, but there is a $10 minimum order on the Pura Vida Bracelets website (PuraVidaBracelets.com), which is the only location where they are currently available.
“That could change,” said Amy H. Bailey, of Newtown Memorial Fund, Inc., a sustainable fund created to support those affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. “The Newtown Memorial Fund is the only charity Pura Vida Bracelets has selected to donate 100% of the proceeds to, which we sincerely appreciate.”
The bracelets feature light blue and white wax coated strings, and are adjustable from two to five inches diameter. Each has a small iron coated copper P charm.
“We were so moved by the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy and wanted to reach out to help through the creation of a bracelet in memory of the students and teachers as well as spread hope throughout the country,” said Griffin Thall, co-founder of Pura Vida Bracelets. “The Sandy Hook Elementary Memorial bracelet has been extremely successful and we've currently sold more than 6,000 bracelets to raise $23,000 for the Newtown Memorial Fund. We’ve decided to continue sales of The Sandy Hook Memorial bracelets as part our charity collection for months to come.”
The business model behind Pura Vida Bracelets evolved from a college graduation trip to Costa Rica taken by co-founders Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman. While travelling they met locals Jorge and Joaquin who were selling colorful handmade bracelets on the street. Prior to returning to California Mr Thall and Mr Goodman requested 400 bracelets from the Costa Rican natives to sell in the United States.
Once placed in several boutiques and surf shops, in and around the La Jolla area, the bracelets sold instantly. The friendship blossomed into a full-fledged business partnership providing employment and steady income for both the Costa Rican artists.
Pura Vida Bracelets are now sold worldwide in more than 2,500 retail outlets.
