Fire Concerns: NWS Issues Red Flag Warning For CT

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the entire state of Connecticut, in effect until 8 pm, due to high winds, low humidity, and available fuels.

An NWS Red Flag Warning means that "critical fire weather conditions are expected or [are] occuring. Any fires that start may spread rapidly and become difficult to extinguish."

The current Red Flag Warning, according to the weather service, is for the "entire tri-state area." Officials are concerned  that the combination of winds (northwest 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph), relative humidity (as low as 23 percent) will combine to create the greatest threat across the region late this afternoon, when the strongest winds and lowest relative humidities occur.

Brush fires are a danger this time of year. Newtown's fire companies have already responded to a handful of brush fires in different areas of town this season. Hook & Ladder Fire Co. has already been to one such fire today.
